The Creusot-Montceau Ecomuseum
The Creusot-Montceau Ecomuseum first started in 1972 under the name of Musée de l'Homme et de l'Industrie. It was one of the first of its kind in France to bear the name of Ecomuseum in 1973. The Ecomuseum aims at identifying, studying and valueing the heritage of a region where major industrial activities such as metallurgy, coal mining, glassworks, and ceramics have been predominant since the end of the XVIIIth. This is why it carries out conservation and research activities, and organises exhibitions, publications and visits for a varied public (local populations, tourists, students, etc) The local population, institutions, research scientists and businesses have helped the Ecomuseum save and promote heritage sites, and build collections and important industrial heritage archives. The Ecomuseum wants to use this heritage for a better knowledge and understanding of man's cultural identity.
